When it comes to something that is unseen, something with no smell, and something with no taste, we need to make sure that any property owner fully understands that Radon is one of the most important environmental hazard inside ay building.  Many other types of indoor environmental air problems are caused by something that can be smelled or causes some type of irritation.  Unfortunately, radon is not one of those items, and Radon Testing is the only way to identify radon inside a building.

The source of radon is the ground.  In our Michigan soils, radon is a naturally occuring gas that forms as soil, rock, and groundwater break down over time.  Because the process happens in the natural environment, radon is a problem throughout most of the United States.  The challenge occurs when we build a house on top of that ground and then the gas enters the building.

Radon enters the house in a few different ways.  It first happens when some portion of the house structure is in contact with the ground.  This can happen in basements or half level houses where half the walls are in contact with the ground.  This can also happen when there are cracks or plumbing connections that benetrate through the wall.  There are many places where the radon can find a way to enter the house.

While many people only think about Radon Testing for real estate transactions, testing should be done whether the house is being sold or not.  There are some home that have never been tested and its a good idea there as well.  One thing that might be considered in new houses is that the air inside the house doesn't move around a lot because of newer types of construction.  This will allow the radon to accumulate in a room.

Commercial properties can also benefit from Radon Testing.  This can be office buildings, warehouses, hospitals, apartment complexes, retail areas, and industrial building.  Property owners and facility managers need to make sure that there is no radon in the building causing long term problems for the people in the buildings.
